“Before starting my recovery with The TARA Clinic I was deep in addiction and denial, using multiple times a week. My health was poor and my life was at risk. I was constantly depressed and anxious, and I was constantly in situations that I had little control over. 

Back then I viewed addiction as a life sentence and believed that recovery was scary and near impossible. 

I finished my treatment in 2023 after completing the Empowered Recovery® Program. My life has been stable, full of joy and love. I feel balanced and optimistic, and I have even proven to myself that I can achieve my goals. 

Now, I know addiction is totally manageable and untethered from fear and stigma. I have a clear understanding of how to approach addictive behaviours that may arise and the tools to implement to prevent them from arising in the first place. 

As someone who needs to understand something holistically in order to grapple with it, the focus on physiological workings of addiction in the body (fight/flight, what happens to your brain etc.) has been super valuable. A lot of addiction therapy is purely psychologically based and in order to make change I needed to understand every aspect of it.

“Before joining The TARA Clinic’s Empowered Recovery® program, my addiction to prescription medication affected my relationships, everyday functioning, and self-confidence. I felt lost and unsure of what my future held. I struggle to think about how many times I tried to stop or what I had previously attempted to do to reach recovery, because it's just a bit too raw.

The TARA Clinic staff are knowledgeable, supportive, and – most importantly – non-judgemental. The content is holistic, with just as much focus on mindfulness, self-care, and self-esteem as on addiction education, which is so important when striving to live a balanced life.

“My life prior to joining The TARA Clinic felt like I was living in a constant struggle between how I wanted my life to look versus what the reality looked like. I wanted to feel healthy, relaxed, fulfilled, and at peace. Instead, I was struggling with the constant feelings of shame, anxiety, stress, fatigue, and frustration. I couldn't understand how I'd sign up for yoga classes, drink green smoothies for breakfast, and then down a whole bottle of wine at night to relax. It felt like such a contradiction to the way I wanted to live, yet I found it so hard to stop or moderate.

I had tried abstaining for periods at a time, I even went a whole year at one stage, to try and reinvent my relationship with alcohol… only to end up in even worse situations then before. I'd been to various counsellors, tried medications, joined SMART Recovery meetings, read all the books, listened to podcasts about sobriety, confided in friends and family about my worries and concerns. I tried to moderate my drinking as the idea of completely abstaining felt utterly horrifying, yet I found that it was never maintainable. I would inevitably wind up feeling hopeless, depressed, and repeating the same cycle of addiction. I resisted the idea of becoming completely sober for years, even after I knew deep down that alcohol was doing me no favours. I had to work on a deep seeded belief that alcohol was the only way to experience fun, relax, and fit into societies norms.

Since completing the Empowered Recovery® Group program in 2022, I feel so incredibly grateful! Grateful, grateful, grateful!!!! I don't feel under a spell or like I'm in a constant internal argument or negotiation. I've found things that make me happy and keep me feeling good. I no longer feel the need to do things I simply don't want to do. Even when shit hits the fan, and by god it does, I'm again so grateful to be present and able to handle them better than before. I don’t want to paint a picture of perfection, sobriety for me hasn't been about that. I have realised that it’s about having the power to show up to all of life's trials and tribulations. To be present for the joy, the delight, the sorrow, and the hardship. I'm here, I'm listening, I'm open and I can take it on. I'm still on a journey of self-discovery, and I want to learn more, to find more things that fulfil me. Now that alcohol isn't a roadblock anymore, so much more is possible. I feel I'll always at some level be working on myself, sobriety isn’t a one stop shop. It is, however, a powerful compass on a bulldozer heading in the right direction.

The TARA Clinic

“Prior to treatment with The TARA Clinic, I was living in a vicious cycle of needing alcohol as a reward every day just for getting through life’s struggles. I was overweight, my complexion was grey, and I was depressed. While I wanted to stop, I felt hopeless to fight against the grip that alcohol had on me.

When I joined The TARA Clinic, I felt like I was talking to someone who had their own intuitive gift of guiding a person through a process of self-reflection. After each session I felt more confident that we could beat this, if I kept up the conversation.

I finished treatment with The TARA Clinic in August 2021, and at this time I realised that I was ready to fly again. My life post The TARA Clinic has been fulfilling beyond what I have ever felt before. The demon had been “exorcised” and my relationships with my wife, my children and colleagues have reached new dimensions. I felt strong and I continue to feel this way, and now the natural reflex response to thinking about alcohol is “how did I ever function while I was drinking?” When I think about having a drink, the default response now is “Why?”  That’s where the thought begins and ends.

This access through video consultation makes it easier for clients and potential clients with busy lives and schedules to work around. TARA became “the complete package” in turning around a detrimental aspect of my life, for which I am grateful.
